The Album
Aretha Live at Fillmore West documents Franklin's three-night stand of March 5-7, 1971 at Bill Graham's San Francisco rock palace, a booking producer Jerry Wexler pursued to connect the Queen of Soul with the Fillmore's rock audience. Wexler also insisted she leave her regular road band behind and work instead with King Curtis and the Kingpins - Cornell Dupree, Bernard Purdie, Jerry Jemmott and Billy Preston, augmented by the Memphis Horns and her own Sweethearts of Soul - a gamble that produced one of the hardest-driving bands she ever recorded with. The set deliberately straddled worlds: her signature 'Respect' and 'Dr. Feelgood' alongside radical soul reworkings of Stephen Stills' 'Love the One You're With,' Simon & Garfunkel's 'Bridge Over Troubled Water,' the Beatles' 'Eleanor Rigby' and Bread's 'Make It With You.' Its legendary moment was unplanned: Ray Charles, in the audience, was called onstage for an extended jamming reprise of 'Spirit in the Dark,' a rare recorded meeting of two soul giants. Released in May 1971 on Atlantic, the album hit #1 on the Billboard R&B chart and #7 on the pop chart and became Franklin's first gold album since 1968's Aretha Now. It is routinely ranked among the greatest live soul albums ever made, a document of Franklin at her absolute peak, and it carries added poignancy as one of King Curtis's final recorded triumphs - he was murdered in New York in August 1971, only months after the album's release.
The Label
This copy carries no 4 Men With Beards branding at all: both sides bear Rainbo Records' generic white 'TEST PRESSING' plant labels (gold logo, '1738 Berkeley Street, Santa Monica, California 90404', Customer/S-/Matrix#/Date fields all unfilled, marked SIDE A / SIDE B). Rainbo occupied the Santa Monica plant from 1974 until 2006 and pressed the 2003 retail edition for 4 Men With Beards, the budget vinyl-reissue imprint run in-house by Berkeley distributor Runt LLC under Atlantic license; the etched '4M-115 A / 4M-115 B' matches the retail 4MWB runout documented on Discogs, and S-59426/S-59267 are Rainbo's standard S-prefix stamper numbers. Test pressings are plant-approval proofs pulled before production labels and jackets exist, so this disc predates commercial copies from the same stamper run while sharing their lacquers. In the title's hierarchy it sits far below the 1971 Atlantic SD 7205 original and the Speakers Corner audiophile edition - plant ephemera from a budget reissue run rather than a collectible pressing variant.
Fidelity
The 4 Men With Beards edition credits no mastering engineer or tape source, and 4MWB/Runt reissues of this era are widely reported on forums.stevehoffman.tv and Discogs as inconsistent and frequently digital- or CD-sourced, with surface-noise and quality-control complaints commonly tied to Rainbo pressings. Expect a flat, somewhat compressed transfer on which the 180g weight is cosmetic rather than sonic. In the album's fidelity hierarchy the Speakers Corner 180g edition (all-analogue, cut by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio from the original tapes, Pallas-pressed) sits at the top, followed by a clean US Atlantic SD 7205 original; this 4M115 pressing sits at the bottom alongside other budget 2000s reissues. As a test pressing from the same lacquers as retail copies it offers no sonic upgrade, and trial stampers can run noisier than approved production pressings.
