The Album
Recorded over two nights at Tokyo's Nippon Budokan in late February and early March 1978, this double live set opened a new chapter for an artist who had spent much of the 1970s moving between acoustic troubadour, electric rock showman and restless reinventor of his own songbook. Backed by a large touring band with horns, strings, backing vocalists and a full rhythm section, Dylan radically rearranged a career's worth of staples - folk anthems, protest songs and mid-60s rock classics alike - into lush, almost cabaret-styled arrangements far removed from their original recordings. The performances drew on the brand-new material he had just written for his upcoming studio album as well as deep catalogue pieces going back to his earliest acoustic records, giving Japanese audiences an unusually panoramic survey of his output to that date. The tour marked Dylan's first visit to Japan and came at a pivotal commercial and artistic moment, as he assembled an ensemble capable of reworking the songs into horn-driven, sometimes reggae- or lounge-inflected arrangements that departed sharply from fan expectations. Critical reaction at the time of its Western release was famously divided, with some longtime listeners and critics dismissing the reworkings as indulgent or lifeless while others came to regard the arrangements as a bold act of self-reinvention. Over time the record has been reassessed by many as a fascinating document of an artist refusing to simply replicate his classic recordings, and it captures a large, versatile touring band at a transitional moment before Dylan's pivot toward the gospel-inflected albums that would follow.

The Label
The labels are the salmon/pink CBS/Sony Japan design with the yellow CBS/Sony eye logo and rim text repeating "CBS/SONY," the catalogue numbers at lower left, and a boxed set of Japanese characters reading "sample record" at upper right on all four sides. That box is the factory-printed promotional marking the Japanese CBS/Sony pressing plant applied to sample copies of this title alongside its ordinary commercial stereo labels of the same salmon design, and its presence on every side places this copy within that promotional pressing of the original 1978 Japanese issue rather than the plain commercial copy, though both share catalogue number, label colour and typography. No deep groove or other era marker beyond the catalogue numbers and the sample-record box is visible on the labels themselves.
Fidelity
This Japanese pressing is cut from the same stereo masters used for the US and other territorial issues of this live recording, and the Japanese vinyl and jacket print quality of this era is generally a notch above the contemporaneous US and European pressings. No audiophile remastering exists for this live album; the original Japanese pressing is sonically comparable to, or slightly cleaner than, the contemporary Western pressings of the same recording, with no later audiophile reissue series established for this title.
Notes
This is the original 1978 Japanese CBS/Sony pressing of the double live set, identified by the salmon CBS/Sony labels carrying a factory-printed Japanese "sample record" box on all four sides, matching catalogue numbers 40AP 1100/40AP 1101 and the gatefold jacket with Japanese-language booklet and poster. The side A runout's stamped sequence agrees closely with the matched release's side A runout, while sides B and D carry different trailing stamper digits than that release's listed strings, pointing to a different stamper pass within the same Japanese pressing rather than a different edition. No deep groove or other pre-1977 era marker is present or relevant; the pressing is dated entirely by its catalogue number, label design and jacket content to 1978.
