This Pressing

1985 US promo-only sampler - Columbia walking-eye labels dated 1985; demonstration/not-for-sale pressing, the only known issue of this title.

The Album

This sampler was issued to promote Biograph, the career-spanning box set that gathered familiar hits, album tracks and previously unreleased material from across Bob Dylan's first two decades as a recording artist. The eight songs chosen for it trace an arc from the electric mid-1960s breakthroughs that redefined popular songwriting, through the confessional country-rock of the Nashville Skyline era, into the mid-1970s work that followed his separation from his wife, and on to the spiritually searching songs of the early 1980s. Several of the selections were previously unreleased studio or live recordings at the time of the box set, including an early, otherwise unissued attempt with The Hawks, a mid-1970s outtake, and a live Rolling Thunder Revue performance. Dylan's standing as the most influential songwriter of his generation rests on exactly this body of work - the electric singles, the Nashville sessions, and the restless, confessional writing of the following decade - and Biograph was widely credited with restoring critical and commercial attention to that catalogue in the mid-1980s. The collection was praised on release for both its depth of selection and its liner essay, and it helped set the template for the artist box-set retrospective that followed in subsequent years.

The Label

Both sides carry the same red field with yellow Columbia walking-eye logos repeated around the rim; any pinkish or orange cast seen on side 2 in photographs is a lighting/camera effect rather than a different label colour, so the two sides share one design. The rim reads "COLUMBIA" repeated with the walking-eye device, side 1 is overprinted "(R) 1985 CBS Inc." and side 2 "COLUMBIA RECORDS MARCAS REG. PRINTED IN U.S.A." with a "(P) 1985 CBS Inc." date, and both bear the "DEMONSTRATION NOT FOR SALE" legend proper to a promo-only pressing. This is the CBS Inc. corporate-name Columbia label design used from the mid-1970s through the mid-1990s, and the printed 1985 date on both labels fixes this copy as a 1985 (or later) pressing regardless of how faithfully the design matches the company's standard layout. No earlier label variant of this title is known, so this is the design the hierarchy's first and only pressing line is built on.

Fidelity

Mastered from the same 1980s analogue/digital sources used for the Biograph box set itself, pressed on standard-weight US vinyl of the mid-1980s. Collectors generally regard the sound as serviceable rather than audiophile-grade, consistent with other mid-1980s Columbia promotional pressings, and no specialist audiophile reissue of this title exists to outrank it.

Notes

This is a 1985 US promotional sampler for the Biograph box set, pressed by Columbia and stamped "DEMONSTRATION NOT FOR SALE" on both sides. The labels carry the corporate-name Columbia walking-eye design and a 1985 copyright date, which fixes this copy to that year or later and rules out any earlier dating regardless of design similarity to older Columbia labels. No other pressing or reissue of this specific promo sampler is known, so it stands as the sole edition of the title.
