The Album
Written in the wake of the breakdown of Bob Dylan's marriage and informed by a period of painting studies that pushed him toward a more fractured, time-shifting narrative style, this album marked his return to intensely personal songwriting after years of looser, more obscure lyricism. The songs were first recorded quickly in New York, but on the advice of his brother Dylan re-recorded several of them in Minneapolis with local musicians just weeks before release, giving the finished record a mix of spare and fuller arrangements. It arrived in the middle of a career that had already reshaped popular songwriting, following the elliptical imagery of his mid-1960s work and years of inconsistent albums, and it was received as a dramatic artistic resurgence. The Label
The side labels are the standard full-color red-and-yellow COLUMBIA commercial design with the catalogue number, track listing and a 1974 CBS Inc. copyright line - there is no evidence on the label of a white-label promotional pressing. Columbia used this red/yellow house design across its catalogue through the mid-1970s, with the specific pressing plant identified only in the deadwax rather than on the label face itself. The runout suffixes on this copy (2H / 2AH) do not match either of the stamper pairs recorded for the promo pressing matched to this catalogue number, indicating this is a separate, standard commercial stamper run rather than that promo edition.
Fidelity
This pressing carries the familiar early analog cut used across Columbia's 1975 commercial stereo copies of this title, with the mastering engineer uncredited on the jacket and label. Collectors generally regard the original-era Columbia pressings as solid, warm-sounding copies, ranking above most of the later 1970s repressings but behind the more recent audiophile vinyl reissues that have since become the reference cut for critical listening. As an ordinary commercial stamper rather than a noted early lacquer, this copy sits in the middle of the album's overall fidelity hierarchy.
Notes
This is a standard-issue 1975 Columbia stereo pressing of PC 33235. The labels carry the full commercial COLUMBIA design with track listing and a 1974 CBS Inc. copyright line, not a plain white-label promo format. The runout stamper suffixes read 2H on side one and 2AH on side two, a pairing distinct from the promo pressing's stampers, placing this copy as an ordinary commercial stamper run of the title. The pressing plant is not identified on the label.
