1964 CBS UK mono repress - orange CBS box-logo label, plain (P) 1962 line, "She's No Good" mislabeled on the Side 1 label, matrix 62022-3A/3B.
The Album
Recorded in just two sessions in November 1961 when Dylan was barely twenty, this debut set John Hammond produced for Columbia on the strength of a harmonica gig and a glowing New York Times review from Robert Shelton. Of the thirteen songs only two are Dylan originals - the wry travelogue "Talkin' New York" and "Song to Woody", his tribute to the ailing Woody Guthrie whose influence shaped the young singer's phrasing and persona. The rest draws on the Greenwich Village folk and blues repertoire he had been absorbing - prison hollers, Appalachian ballads, and blues sides by Blind Lemon Jefferson and Bukka White - filtered through his own ragged, urgent delivery on guitar and harmonica. Commercially the album made little impact on release, earning Dylan the backhanded nickname "Hammond's Folly" inside Columbia, but it introduced the voice and persona that would upend American songwriting within two years. In retrospect it stands as the opening statement of one of popular music's most consequential careers, valued less for its mostly-covers content than for the nerve and interpretive intelligence Dylan already brought to other people's songs. It remains a touchstone for the early-1960s folk and blues revival and for tracing the roots Dylan would soon transform.

The Label
This copy carries the orange CBS label with the square "eye"-in-a-box logo, the catalogue number BPG 62022 with the US reference (CL 1779) alongside it, and a plain "(P) 1962" copyright line with no "Recording First Published" wording. CBS launched in the UK in 1962 with pressing handled by Philips, and the earliest Philips-made copies carry Philips-style matrix numbers and, on some copies, the fuller "Recording First Published 1962" credit; this copy's "62022-3A/3B" style matrix and the plain (P) line instead match the label's own in-house pressing, run once CBS acquired its own UK plant, placing it as a repress from later in 1964 rather than the original mid-1962 Philips pressing. The label here mislabels the opening track as "She's No Good" rather than the correct "You're No Good" printed on the sleeve, a tell shared with the second Philips pressing and carried over onto this CBS-made repress. No deep-groove ring is evident on the flat orange label.
Fidelity
This is a mono folk-blues recording cut simply with voice, acoustic guitar and harmonica, and the UK CBS pressing carries the same basic mastering as the contemporary domestic issues rather than any audiophile remastering. Collectors generally regard the early British CBS pressings as serviceable but secondary to the first US Columbia six-eye mono pressing for outright sonic presence, and this later CBS-plant repress sits below both the original US pressing and the earlier Philips-made UK issues in the pressing hierarchy, though its simple acoustic content is forgiving of pressing variation. No audiophile reissue of this specific mono mix is widely regarded as superseding a clean original-era copy.
Notes
This is a 1964 UK CBS pressing of Dylan's debut, made once CBS acquired its own UK pressing plant, rather than the original mid-1962 pressing handled by Philips. The plain "(P) 1962" line (without the fuller "Recording First Published" wording seen on early Philips-made copies) and the in-house "62022-3A/3B" matrix format both point to this later run. The Side 1 label mislabels the opening track "She's No Good" instead of the sleeve's correct "You're No Good", a tell it shares with the second of the two earlier Philips pressings. No deep groove is present on the flat orange label.
