Variant chronology

c. 1971-73 - Trade Mark of Quality TMQ 71017, the original US bootleg pressing of this recording
mid-1970s - The Amazing Kornyfone Record Label TAKRL 1962-RS, Kornyfone Reissue Series ('Ted's Choice') jacket - this copy, pressed with mismatched Spindizzie 'Bruce Dillon' SD 841 playing-surface labels in place of this title's own label printing
other surviving examples of the same TAKRL 1962-RS jacket carry the Kornyfone label's correct playing-surface printing for this title, making the Spindizzie labels on this copy a pressing-plant mix-up rather than a separate authorized variant

This Pressing

1974 Kornyfone reissue (Ted's Choice series) of the original Trade Mark of Quality bootleg, catalogue TAKRL 1962-RS.

The Album

This bootleg preserves the electric half of Bob Dylan's controversial 1966 world tour, the set backed by the group then known as The Hawks and soon to become The Band, playing material from Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde alongside reworked earlier songs. Dylan had shocked folk purists months earlier by going electric, and these shows were met with booing and walkouts from audiences expecting the acoustic troubadour of his early records; the tour became one of the most mythologized episodes in his career. Tape of the performance circulated widely among collectors for years before any official release, and this unlicensed pressing was one of the vehicles by which that tape reached a wider audience. The set captures a tight, loud, confrontational band sound quite unlike Dylan's studio arrangements of the same songs, with Robbie Robertson's guitar and Garth Hudson's organ pushing the material into something closer to rock performance than folk accompaniment. The concert is frequently associated with an audience shout of "Judas" and Dylan's retort before the band tears into the closing number, an exchange that became emblematic of the rock-vs-folk debate of the era. Decades later the performance was recognized as historically significant enough to be issued officially as part of Dylan's ongoing archival series, cementing its status as one of the most bootlegged and eventually most celebrated live recordings in his catalogue. For long stretches before that official release, pressings like this one were the only way fans could hear the show, giving this title an outsized importance in Dylan bootleg collecting circles.

The Label

This copy carries catalogue number TAKRL 1962-RS on The Amazing Kornyfone Record Label, part of that label's Kornyfone Reissue Series subtitled "Ted's Choice." The back jacket states the album originally appeared in this form as Trade Mark of Quality number TMQ 71017, placing this pressing as a reissue of that earlier Dylan bootleg rather than the first unofficial issue itself. The label artwork and typography on this copy's playing sides are not described here.

Fidelity

The source is a circulating audience/soundboard-derived tape of Dylan's 1966 electric set that was mastered for unofficial release rather than from studio-grade masters, so surface noise and dynamic compression typical of 1970s bootleg pressings should be expected. Collectors generally regard the officially issued version of this concert, released decades later as part of Dylan's archival live series, as sonically superior in every respect to any bootleg pressing of the tape. Within the bootleg pressings of this title, copies on heavier, better-centered vinyl are preferred, but none approach the clarity of the later authorized release.

Notes

This copy is issued under catalogue number TAKRL 1962-RS on The Amazing Kornyfone Record Label's Kornyfone Reissue Series (Ted's Choice). The back-jacket text states the album originally appeared as Trade Mark of Quality TMQ 71017, making this a reissue of that earlier Dylan bootleg rather than the first pressing. The etchings 1962-A and 1962-B appear in the runouts of sides one and two respectively, matching the Kornyfone catalogue number. The specific label artwork on this copy's playing sides is not described here.
