The Album

"Band Of The Hand" was written and recorded by Bob Dylan as the title theme for the 1986 Michael Mann-produced crime drama of the same name, cut with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers serving as his backing band during the period the two were touring together. Petty produced the track himself, and the session was recorded in Sydney, Australia during the True Confessions tour the two acts shared that year, giving the song a harder, more contemporary rock edge than Dylan's studio work of the era. The pairing reflected a mid-1980s stretch in which Dylan, coming off the mixed reception of his Empire Burlesque album, leaned on Petty's band for live and recording support, a collaboration that reinvigorated his sound and stage presence. The song itself is a driving, horn-and-guitar-accented rocker quite different from Dylan's folk and singer-songwriter catalogue, aimed squarely at mainstream film-soundtrack radio. It appeared on the Band Of The Hand motion picture soundtrack album alongside tracks by other contemporary rock acts, and functioned as a one-off promotional single to support that film tie-in. While a minor entry in Dylan's vast discography, it stands as a notable document of his Heartbreakers-backed period and is valued by collectors chiefly for that pairing rather than chart impact. Critics at the time treated it as a solid, if unremarkable, soundtrack cut, its chief interest being Dylan's unusual venture into uptempo, radio-ready rock under Petty's direction.

The Label

Side 1 carries an off-white MCA Records label with the MCA logo centred, the full Universal Plaza address, full production credits, and the rim legend PROMOTIONAL ONLY - NOT FOR SALE; Side 2 is a cream label with the same MCA logo, copyright line and the same promotional rim text. Both labels print a 1986 copyright, which is the label company's standard early-to-mid-1980s Universal City design used across its promotional 12" singles of the period. The design, the promo-only wording, and the pressed-in 1986 date place this copy squarely as an original 1986 US promotional 12" pressing issued to radio/clubs alongside the film's soundtrack release, not a later reissue.

Fidelity

The 12" promo pressing carries the same mix and mastering as the commercial 7" and soundtrack-album cut of the song, sourced from the Sydney session tapes rather than a dedicated audiophile remaster. Collectors do not rate this title among Dylan's audiophile-prized catalogue, and no specialist reissue series has addressed it; the original MCA pressing, promo or stock, remains the only cut most collectors encounter. Surface and mastering quality are typical of mid-1980s major-label commercial pressings rather than exceptional.

Notes

This is a 1986 MCA promotional-only 12" single of "Band Of The Hand," the same track pressed on both sides. The labels carry the standard early-to-mid-1980s MCA Universal City design with a 1986 copyright, which fixes the pressing to 1986 or later and rules out any earlier date. The PROMOTIONAL ONLY - NOT FOR SALE rim text on both sides confirms this as a radio/club service copy rather than a commercial stock pressing. No mono/stereo distinction is stated beyond the standard stereo single release for this title.
