This Pressing

1981 Columbia promo pressing (stereo) - Demonstration/Not For Sale label, Capitol-mastered lacquers; no earlier issue of this radio-special LP is known.

The Album

This disc preserves a rare, extended radio conversation between Bob Dylan and WNEW-FM's Dave Herman, taped in Dylan's London hotel room the afternoon after the final show of his 1981 European tour at Earl's Court. By his own admission on the accompanying cover letter, Herman considered it only the second time in Dylan's career that he had agreed to a broadcast interview reaching a national audience, making the tape itself a notable artifact of an artist famously guarded with the press. The conversation arrived at a pivotal moment: Dylan was emerging from his contentious "gospel trilogy" period and preparing to release Shot of Love, an album that mixed his newfound Christian convictions with a return to more secular, romantic and reflective songwriting. Interspersed with Herman's questions are three tracks pulled from that forthcoming record - Every Grain of Sand, the title track Shot of Love, and Heart of Mine - giving listeners an early, unfiltered preview of the album alongside Dylan's own comments on his faith, his songwriting and his evolving public persona. Dylan reportedly spent part of the session relaxed and barefoot, strumming a guitar between answers, lending the tape an informal, intimate quality unusual for his public appearances of the era. For collectors and critics, the interview is valued less as a performance than as a rare window into Dylan's mindset at the hinge between his born-again period and the more worldly work that would follow through the 1980s. It has since become a touchstone reference for writers tracing the Shot of Love sessions and Dylan's state of mind during that transitional tour.

The Label

Side 1 carries a red-and-yellow Columbia label with a single walking-eye logo at the top and the word COLUMBIA repeated around the rim, printed DEMONSTRATION - NOT FOR SALE; side 2 carries a red-and-yellow label of the "six-eye" rim style, with two walking-eye logos at upper left and right and COLUMBIA RECORDS repeated around the rim with six small eye devices, also printed DEMONSTRATION NOT FOR SALE. Both sides carry the (p) 1981 CBS Inc. and (c) 1981 Special Rider Music (ASCAP) lines, so neither label design can predate 1981 regardless of which classic Columbia rim style it echoes. CBS used more than one promo-label die at once in this period, and the two dies seen here on the same copy place it squarely in that early-1980s promo-pressing window rather than any earlier Columbia label era. No other pressing of this promo-only interview record is known to the trade, so this is also the only line in its hierarchy.

Fidelity

The lacquers were cut at Capitol Mastering from the original interview and music tapes recorded at CBS Recording Studios, New York, and pressed by Columbia for promotional radio distribution only. As a talk-heavy promo special rather than a music album, it was never subject to audiophile reissue attention, and collectors judge copies chiefly on vinyl and cover condition rather than mastering generation. This pressing represents the only cut of the program that is known to exist on vinyl.

Notes

This is a 1981 US Columbia promotional pressing of the Dave Herman/WNEW-FM interview special, stamped DEMONSTRATION - NOT FOR SALE on both labels and dated by its own (p)/(c) 1981 copyright lines, which rule out any earlier manufacture. The runout etchings carry the Capitol mastering stamps matching the catalogue number's two sides, confirming the lacquers were cut at Capitol for this Columbia promo run. The two labels show slightly different rim dies (a single-eye style on side 1 and a six-eye rim style on side 2), consistent with CBS running more than one promo label die concurrently in this period rather than indicating two different pressing dates. No commercial retail edition of this title is known, so this promo-only pressing stands as the sole documented issue.
