This Pressing

2004 Columbia/Legacy Bootleg Series Vol. 6 3LP box set, first and only vinyl pressing of this title, in one of its two gram weights.

The Album

Recorded on Halloween night, October 31, 1964, at New York's Philharmonic Hall, this concert captures Bob Dylan at the hinge point between his early topical-protest persona and the surreal, electrified songwriting that would follow within months. Coming two months after Another Side of Bob Dylan and well before the controversial plugged-in sets of 1965, the show is an all-acoustic performance delivered solo on guitar and harmonica, with Dylan bantering wryly with an audience still arguing over his direction. Joan Baez, already a major folk star and an important early champion of Dylan's work, joins him for a run of songs in the second half, their duets capturing a real-life partnership at its creative peak. The set list mixes signature protest numbers like

The Label

The back cover carries the small Columbia and Legacy trademark logos and a manufacturing credit tying the vinyl pressing to the 2004 Bootleg Series Vol. 6 box set run; the cover art and back-cover layout match the first and only vinyl issue of this title, which was pressed in two weights (140 gram and 200 gram Quiex SV-P) under license to Classic Records. The labels carry no deep groove on either weight; the two are distinguished instead by their stamper codes in the runout, and a white-label 200 gram test pressing of the title carries the runout etching TCCS 86882Q.

Fidelity

The vinyl box draws on the same 2004 transfer used across the Bootleg Series Vol. 6 release: mixed by Michael H. Brauer, mastered by Greg Calbi at Sterling Sound, with lacquers cut by Bernie Grundman and manufactured by Classic Records. Collectors on the forums rate the all-acoustic 1964 hall recording as clean, warm and well-balanced for its vintage, and regard the heavier 200-gram Quiex SV-P pressing as the sonically preferred of the title's two vinyl weights. Which of those two weights this copy represents is not established, so its place in that two-way ranking is not established.

Notes

This is the 2004 Columbia/Legacy vinyl box set of The Bootleg Series Vol. 6, the sole vinyl edition of this title, originally issued in two gram weights (140 gram and the heavier 200 gram Quiex SV-P pressing manufactured under license to Classic Records). Neither weight carries a deep groove on the label; the weights are distinguished by stamper codes in the runout, and a 200 gram test pressing of the title carries the runout etching TCCS 86882Q. The cover design, catalogue numbers and back-cover production credit match the 2004 release window; nothing on the jacket itself distinguishes which of the two vinyl weights this copy is.
