This Pressing
2023 first US vinyl pressing of the Shadow Kingdom soundtrack - standard Columbia/Legacy commercial issue, not before 1980 per its barcode.
The Album
Shadow Kingdom began as a filmed performance staged on a Santa Monica soundstage during the pandemic shutdown of touring, directed by Alma Har'el and presented as a noir-tinged black-and-white broadcast in 2021 rather than a conventional concert. Dylan reworked a run of songs spanning his catalogue from the mid-1960s through the early 1970s, stripping away familiar arrangements in favor of hushed, acoustic-leaning reinventions built around accordion, mandolin, and muted guitars, with a masked ensemble miming onstage to music actually recorded separately in the studio. The track selection skips his most over-exposed hits in favor of deeper cuts and overlooked favorites, letting songs like "Queen Jane Approximately" and "Tombstone Blues" breathe in new, spectral settings. The project arrived as Dylan, well into his eighties, continued an unusually prolific late-career stretch that had already produced Rough and Rowdy Ways, and it was received by critics as one of the more inventive reinterpretations of his back catalogue, prized for its intimacy and its refusal to simply replicate the originals. Framed as a soundtrack to the film rather than a conventional studio album, it extended Dylan's long history of restaging his own songbook and offered longtime listeners a strikingly different lens on material most had heard only in its familiar 1960s and 1970s forms.

The Label
Both labels seen on this copy carry the same grey-and-white retro Columbia design: the circular musical-note logo at the top, the "Viva-tonal Recording" banner, "Electrical Process" and "Stereo/33 1/3 RPM" text, and the small "a division of Sony Music Entertainment" credit line at the rim, with no Legacy wording on the labels themselves. This is a modern revival of Columbia's vintage 1920s-30s label art used as packaging flourish for current Columbia/Legacy releases, not a period label design, and it appears identically on sides one through three. The uniform retro design across all printed sides places this copy squarely as a standard first-run commercial pressing of the title rather than any alternate territory or club edition, which would carry different label text or a Legacy/Sony logo variant.
Fidelity
The album was mastered by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound, cut from the original studio mixes engineered by Mike Piersante, a reliable modern mastering chain for a contemporary major-label release. Collectors generally regard this pressing as solidly quiet and well-centered for a mass-produced modern title, without the surface-noise issues sometimes reported on other multi-plant Dylan reissues of the period. There is no audiophile-grade alternate cut (no Analogue Productions, Mobile Fidelity, or similar deluxe edition) of this title, so this standard commercial pressing represents the top of its own fidelity tier.
Notes
This is the standard 2023 US Columbia/Legacy 2LP release of Shadow Kingdom, confirmed by its retro Columbia labels, gatefold jacket with printed inner sleeves, and barcode-bearing packaging that places manufacture no earlier than 1980 and, by its catalogue and matrix data, in 2023. The runout stamper suffix on this copy (#23 on all three printed sides) differs from the handful of stamper variants documented for the release, consistent with the title having been pressed across multiple plants (Memphis Record Pressing, with plating at both GZ Media and RTI) rather than indicating a distinct edition. The fourth side carries no printed label, matching the title's design as a single-sided etched surface rather than a fourth playable side.
