This Pressing

2015 Columbia C-121888 stereo LP, USA & Canada pressing - Sterling Sound lacquer cut by engineer RJ, pressed at United Record Pressing.

The Album

Shadows in the Night found Bob Dylan turning away from original songwriting to record ten songs long associated with Frank Sinatra, performing them not as crooning tributes but stripped to their bare emotional core with a small acoustic-leaning combo built around pedal steel guitar rather than strings. The sessions were cut live in the studio with minimal overdubbing, Dylan singing close to the musicians rather than over a fixed arrangement, an approach he described as uncovering the songs rather than covering them. It arrived deep into Dylan's long late-career renaissance, following decades in which his voice had roughened into something better suited to world-weary ballads than to the pop material of his youth, and the album reframed that late voice as an asset for interpreting the Great American Songbook. Critics were largely won over, surprised that the gravelly, aged instrument could serve these standards with such tenderness and restraint, and many singled out the performances as some of the most affecting singing of his later years. The record marked a turning point in his catalogue, opening a trilogy of standards albums that followed in subsequent years, and it renewed critical conversation about Dylan's vocal artistry at an age when most singers' best work is long behind them. Its quiet, unhurried arrangements and the absence of drums gave the songs a hushed, after-hours intimacy that became the record's defining character.

The Label

Side one is a blue-and-white label with a blue wedge panel at left, 'MICROGROOVE' and 'LONG PLAYING' arced around the rim, and a 2015 Columbia/Sony Music Entertainment copyright line; side two is cream and dark blue with the same rim wording and a matching 2015 copyright line. Both sides state the copyright year 2015, so the pressing cannot predate that year regardless of the nostalgic 'microgroove' styling, which Columbia used broadly across its contemporary reissue and new-release catalogue in this period. The matrix data cut into the vinyl (Sterling Sound lacquer, engineer initials RJ, pressing at United Record Pressing) identifies this specific copy as the USA & Canada pressing of the title rather than the differently-sourced European pressing that shares the same catalogue number and release year.

Fidelity

Recorded and mixed by Al Schmitt and mastered by Doug Sax, a veteran audiophile mastering engineer whose work on this title is generally well regarded by collectors for its warmth and clarity given the spare, largely drum-free arrangements. This USA & Canada pressing was cut at Sterling Sound rather than the European pressing's German cutting house, but both derive from the same Doug Sax master and collectors on the forums do not report a meaningful sonic gap between the two pressings. No audiophile specialist reissue (Analogue Productions, Mobile Fidelity, or similar) of this title exists, so the standard 180-gram pressings - of which this is one - remain the best available cut of the album on vinyl.

Notes

This is the USA & Canada pressing of the 2015 Columbia release, distinct from the Europe pressing that shares the same catalogue number and release year. The runout data cut into the vinyl - Sterling Sound lacquer, engineer initials RJ, and the United Record Pressing plant - separates it from the European pressing, which was lacquered at SST Brüggemann and pressed at MPO. Both labels print a 2015 copyright line, so the record cannot predate that year regardless of its retro label styling. The jacket retains its shrink wrap and includes the bundled bonus CD called for by this release.
