This Pressing

The Album
This set gathers Bob Dylan's first eight studio albums, from his 1962 self-titled debut of traditional and blues-derived material through 1968's John Wesley Harding, as they were originally mixed and most widely heard: in mono. Dylan emerged from the Greenwich Village folk scene as a songwriter of extraordinary range, moving within a few years from topical protest songs through surreal electric rock to the stripped-down parables of his late-'60s work, a trajectory that reshaped the vocabulary of popular songwriting. Albums like The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan and The Times They Are A-Changin' became touchstones of the folk revival and the civil-rights era, while Bringing It All Back Home and Highway 61 Revisited marked his controversial, galvanizing turn to electric rock and roll. Blonde on Blonde, recorded largely in Nashville, is regarded as one of the first major rock double albums and a high-water mark of his mid-'60s output. In these years mono was the dominant commercial format and the mix Dylan and his producers actually supervised, while the stereo mixes were often assembled afterward by engineers without the artists present. Critically, these records are considered among the most significant in American popular music, cementing Dylan's reputation as a generational voice and a central figure in the evolution of folk into rock.

The Label
No side-label photograph accompanies this copy, so the label design itself cannot be described; the front jacket carries the "MONO 360 SOUND" arrow logo and the Columbia target logo, consistent with Columbia/Legacy's 2010 mono-reissue dress. The jacket's barcode is a mark that did not exist before 1980, so this copy cannot be earlier than its stated 2010 release regardless of any vintage-style label reproduction inside. The set is one of at least three physically different 2010 US pressings of the same catalogue number (a numbered first issue and two non-numbered subsequent pressings, one using the original matrix and one using Netherlands-pressed EU stampers), and without a dead-wax or label photograph this copy cannot be placed among them with certainty.
Fidelity
The mono mixes were newly cut from first-generation mono masters, supervised and equalized by a veteran mastering engineer in the same mastering room used for the contemporaneous European vinyl cut. Collectors on the forums generally rate this box favorably as a faithful, well-sourced return to Dylan's original mono mixes on quiet, heavyweight vinyl, ranking it above the mono tracks folded into later stereo-era reissues and the CD box, though individual-title audiophile mono reissues that have since appeared from specialist labels are regarded by some as sonic equals or betters on a title-by-title basis.
Notes
This is a 2010 Columbia/Legacy mono box set reproducing Dylan's first eight albums from their original mono mixes, sealed and apparently unplayed. The barcode on the jacket is a post-1980 feature and confirms this copy is a modern reissue pressing rather than any vintage-era pressing, consistent with the stated 2010 release. The cover carries a pressing sticker reading "HQ-180 RTI," identifying this as an RTI-pressed copy; the jacket is non-numbered, and the exact pressing variant among the non-numbered RTI-pressed and EU-matrix pressings of this catalogue number is not stated on the label itself.
