The Album

All That Was East Is West Of Me Now is Glen Hansard's fifth solo album and his first in four years, born from an unusually public writing process: over five Tuesdays in November 2022 he road-tested new songs before an unassuming crowd in the back room of a small west Dublin pub, believing a song is only completed once it has been witnessed. The record was then tracked quickly and intuitively at longtime collaborator David Odlum's home studio outside Dublin, with a band drawn largely from the circle around Hansard's long-running band The Frames. Hansard first found fame fronting The Frames, then reached a global audience via The Swell Season with Markéta Irglová and the film Once, whose song 'Falling Slowly' won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. The title reflects a fifty-something artist's sense that there is more behind him than ahead, yet the eight songs favor endurance and grace over regret, running from the sprawling opener 'The Feast Of St John' through a theremin-tinged mid-album stretch to the closing pairing of the defiant 'Bearing Witness' and the mortality-facing 'Short Life.' Musically it is his most rock-oriented, band-driven statement since The Frames' Burn the Maps era, weaving Irish folk roots and orchestral color into the loose communal energy of his live shows. Critics responded warmly, praising its emotional candor and the lived-in, unpolished feel of its songs.

The Label

Both sides use a fully custom, full-bleed greyscale 'lunar surface' art-photo label with no manufacturer logo, address, rim text, or arc band anywhere on the printed surface - Side A is a dark/shadowed version with white tracklist and a red 'A', Side B a bleached/overexposed version with red tracklist and a black 'B'; '87976-1' is printed in small type at the bottom of both. Since Anti- has issued only this one vinyl configuration (black standard plus a clear indie-exclusive using identical label art) since the 20 October 2023 release, there is no evolving label-era timeline to place this against - the design itself is definitive proof of authenticity for this catalog number rather than a marker of pressing order. The absence of any 'TCL' sticker or clear vinyl confirms this is the standard black retail pressing, first in the hierarchy alongside its European twin.

Fidelity

Produced and mixed by David Odlum, almost certainly cut from high-resolution digital masters with no separately credited vinyl mastering engineer. As the only vinyl mastering that exists for this album (shared by the black standard and clear indie-exclusive editions), it stands as the reference pressing by default, with no vintage original or audiophile reissue (Analogue Productions, Mobile Fidelity, etc.) to rank it against. Epitaph/Anti- pressings of this era are generally quiet and competently cut, and the dense rock-with-strings production translates reasonably well to vinyl, though some copies show surface noise or manufacturing issues. Collectors on the forums have not yet settled on a firm consensus given the album's recency.

2023 Anti- 87976-1 - original (and to date only) black vinyl pressing, released 20 October 2023. The labels carry no manufacturer text or logo, only the lunar-photograph art and '87976-1' at the bottom of each side, identical in layout to the limited clear edition, so labels alone do not distinguish color variants. The US UPC 045778797615 on the jacket confirms the US retail edition versus the European Proper Music pressing (UPC 8714092797619), and the deadwax etching (collector transcribed 'EPITAH', properly 'EPITAPH' 87976-1 A/B, Epitaph/Anti-'s standard etched prefix) matches the verified matrix for this catalog number. This is the common black-vinyl configuration, not the limited indie-exclusive clear edition (87976-1TCL sticker).
