The Album

This music was recorded on October 13, 1958 in New York under pianist Cecil Taylor's leadership, with John Coltrane sitting in as a guest alongside trumpeter Kenny Dorham, bassist Chuck Israels and drummer Louis Hayes; it first appeared as Cecil Taylor Quintet's 'Hard Driving Jazz' (mono) and 'Stereo Drive' (stereo) on United Artists. When Coltrane's stature exploded after his Atlantic and Impulse! records of 1960-61, United Artists reissued the same session under his name as 'Coltrane Time' in 1962, a title change that reflects the label cashing in on his new fame rather than any new recording. The date is a fascinating one-off meeting of two players headed in radically different directions - Coltrane still working largely inside changes-based hard bop while Taylor was already pushing toward free jazz - and the tension between their conceptions gives the record its unusual character. Dorham, a superb and under-sung soloist, is a strong third voice throughout, and the choice of standards ('Just Friends,' 'Like Someone in Love') alongside originals lets all three horns and Taylor's percussive piano stretch out. Critically the album has always been regarded as a minor but intriguing footnote in Coltrane's catalog rather than a core statement, valued chiefly for the rare on-record encounter between Coltrane and Taylor. It remains a curiosity prized by collectors and historians for that pairing more than for its commercial impact at the time.

The Label

The side labels show the grey silhouette 'saxophonist kicking' logo over a white field, 'UNITED ARTISTS JAZZ' lettering at left, artist/title beneath, and catalogue 'UAJS 15001 A' / 'SIDE 1' (and B/SIDE 2) at right - the standard United Artists Jazz series design used across the 14000/15000 mono/stereo run launched in 1962. This is a flat label, with no deep groove. Two runout variants are known for this stereo pressing: one etched with an 'A-1A' suffix and a Plastylite ear stamp, and one etched 'CLB-1'. The runouts on this copy ('AM 111-1' on side A, 'CLB O T' on side B) belong to the CLB stamper family but represent a later or otherwise undocumented stamper generation within the same 1962 stereo pressing run rather than a distinct cover or label variant. Since the label design is identical across both known runout variants, only the deadwax distinguishes them.

Fidelity

This is a US stereo pressing of a 1958 session cut for United Artists; the tapes were not Van Gelder originals for this specific date and the mastering/cutting credits on this UA reissue are not individually documented beyond the back-cover engineering credit to Fernando Vargas. United Artists' early-60s jazz pressings are generally considered adequate but unremarkable sonically compared to contemporaneous Blue Note/Prestige/Impulse! work, and this title has not attracted significant audiophile reissue attention (no Analogue Productions, Music Matters, or Mobile Fidelity edition exists). Collector discussion of this record centers on the Coltrane/Taylor pairing rather than sonics; among the era's UA pressings, an original 1962 stereo copy such as this one is the reference cut, with the 1968 Solid State and 1970s UA reissues generally regarded as secondary.
