This Pressing

1961-62 Bethlehem BCP-6066 mono reissue - pink King-distributed label with deep groove; sole US pressing of this catalogue number.

The Album

This LP compiles all-star Bethlehem studio sessions from October-December 1957, assembled from the same pool of New York modern-jazz players that also produced the Art Blakey Big Band date for the label. John Coltrane appears on four of the eight bands, sharing the billing with rotating frontline players including Donald Byrd, Frank Rehak, Al Cohn and Gene Quill, all backed by a house rhythm section anchored by Oscar Pettiford. The set arrived at a pivotal moment for Coltrane, who in 1957 was simultaneously working through his transformative stint with Thelonious Monk and cementing the harmonic vocabulary that would define his mature style, making these sides valuable documents of a tenor voice in rapid ascent even within an ensemble-first, songbook-oriented program. The repertoire favors standards and lesser-known originals by the assembled sidemen rather than Coltrane compositions, giving the record the character of a well-drilled jam session rather than a leader date. Bethlehem later repackaged the same music under Coltrane's name as "In The Winner's Circle," trading on his fast-rising stardom to sell a record that had originally been issued as a various-artists compilation. Critically the album is valued today less as a cohesive Coltrane statement than as a snapshot of the era's session-band camaraderie and a chance to hear the saxophonist stretch out alongside first-call New York contemporaries. It remains a minor but historically interesting entry in the extensive Coltrane Bethlehem/Prestige-era discography collectors piece together from vintage 1950s sideman dates.

The Label

The side labels are pink/red with the "BETHLEHEM / HIGH FIDELITY" banner logo at top and "DISTRIBUTED BY KING RECORDS, INC." printed around the bottom rim - one logo, no ring or arc slogan beyond the King distribution text. Bethlehem entered a distribution deal with King Records in 1958 and was fully absorbed by King in 1962; catalogue number BCP-6066 dates to that 1961-62 window when King-distributed pink labels replaced the earlier black/silver Bethlehem design used on the 1958 BCP-6024 pressing of the same music. Both sides carry a deep groove, consistent with an early-1960s Bethlehem/King pressing and distinguishing this sole US pressing of the BCP-6066 catalogue number from the later 1984 and 2013 reissues, both of which post-date deep-groove pressing practice.

Fidelity

Mastering engineer is uncredited on this Bethlehem pressing; the source is the label's own 1957 session tapes cut for the original BCP-6024 issue and reused for this repackaging. Collectors on the forums generally regard vintage Bethlehem jazz pressings as serviceable but not audiophile-grade compared to contemporaneous Blue Note or Riverside cuts, with variable mastering quality across the catalogue. The 2013 Pure Pleasure 180-gram audiophile reissue is well regarded for cleaner surfaces and improved dynamics, and is considered by most collectors to outrank this vintage King-era pressing sonically, though the original mono cut retains value for its vintage-tape warmth and historical authenticity.

Notes

This is the 1961-62 Bethlehem reissue of 1958's various-artists "Winner's Circle" (BCP-6024), repackaged with a new Coltrane-name cover under catalogue number BCP-6066. The pink/red label with the "DISTRIBUTED BY KING RECORDS, INC." rim text places it in the King-distribution era that began in 1958 and culminated in King's full absorption of Bethlehem in 1962, distinguishing it from the earlier BCP-6024 black-label pressing and from the later 1984 and 2013 reissues. Deep groove on both sides is consistent with this early-1960s window rather than a flat-label 1980s reissue. Cover and label both print catalogue number 6066, though minor formatting differs (BCP-6066 vs 6066), which is a printing variance, not a pressing tell.
