Evenings at the Village Gate: John Coltrane with Eric Dolphy

In August 1961 John Coltrane brought his working quartet, newly expanded with Eric Dolphy and a rotating pair of bassists (Reggie Workman and Art Davis), into the Village Gate in Greenwich Village for a short club engagement that was captured on tape by the venue rather than for commercial release. Coltrane was at a pivotal juncture, having just left Atlantic for Impulse! and begun stretching the modal vocabulary of "My Favorite Things" and "Impressions" into longer, more exploratory group improvisations, with Dolphy's astringent alto and bass clarinet pushing the music further outside straight-ahead harmony. The material captured here overlaps with the more celebrated Village Vanguard sessions from the same period and documents the same restless creative partnership, including extended readings of "Greensleeves" and the African-derived vamp "Africa" that anticipate Coltrane's turn toward modal and world-music-inflected large-ensemble writing on Africa/Brass and Impressions. Dolphy's tenure with Coltrane, controversial with critics at the time who found his playing "anti-jazz," is now regarded as one of the most fruitful and adventurous pairings in early-1960s jazz. The recordings sat unheard for decades in the New York Public Library's Music & Recorded Sound Division before being restored and assembled into a single narrative program, giving listeners a fuller picture of this quintet's nightly working method than the studio albums of the period could. As a document it deepens the record of Coltrane's transition from the classic quartet sound toward the harmonically freer, modally expansive music of his mid-1960s work, and it stands as important late testimony to Dolphy's brief but influential association with him before Dolphy's death in 1964.
