Black Acid Soul

Black Acid Soul is the 2021 debut album by Lady Blackbird, the reborn persona of Los Angeles singer Marley Munroe, who had spent years as a journeyman vocalist under other names before producer Chris Seefried helped her recast herself in the image of the great jazz-soul divas. Recorded largely live in Sunset Sound's Studio B in Hollywood - a room steeped in Prince and Doors history - the album strips soul, jazz and blues to voice, piano, double bass and brushed percussion, putting Munroe's huge, scarred, Nina Simone-evoking voice front and center. The set is built on daring reinterpretations: Simone's civil-rights anthem "Blackbird" opens the record as a statement of identity, Irma Thomas's "Ruler Of My Heart" (itself a reworking of "Time Is On My Side") becomes a slow-burn showcase, and Tim Hardin's "It'll Never Happen Again" closes the cycle with devastating restraint, alongside originals like the title track co-written with Seefried. Trombone Shorty drops in a trumpet cameo on the gospel-inflected "Nobody's Sweetheart," underscoring the album's New Orleans soul undercurrents. Critics on both sides of the Atlantic hailed it as one of the standout vocal debuts of the year, with particular praise for Munroe's ability to sound simultaneously ancient and new, and it established Lady Blackbird as a major festival and jazz-club draw. The record taps directly into the lineage of Simone, Billie Holiday and Esther Phillips while remaining unmistakably contemporary in its stark, minimalist production.
