This Pressing

2012 Music On Vinyl pressing (MOVLP502) - the record's first official vinyl release, housed in facsimile 2004 artwork; not an original-era pressing.

The Album

Dear Heather, released in 2004, was Leonard Cohen's eleventh studio album and his first full collection of new material in nearly a decade, arriving after years spent largely in monastic retreat at Mt. Baldy. Rather than a conventional set of songs, the record is a loose collage of spoken-word pieces, hummed fragments, and settings of other poets' work - Byron's "Go No More A-Roving," a traditional Quebecois folk air reworked as "The Faith" - alongside originals mourning friends and mentors, including the publisher Jack McClelland and the poet A.M. Klein. Cohen's longtime backing singer and collaborator Anjani Thomas took on a far larger creative role here, co-writing, arranging, and sharing lead vocals on several tracks, while poet and musician Ed Sanders of The Fugs also contributed. The album's intimate, conversational, almost improvisatory tone marked a deliberate departure from the polished productions of his 1980s and 1990s work, favoring warmth and informality over grandeur. Critics were divided on its loose structure but generally praised its candor and the late-career clarity of Cohen's voice and wit. In retrospect, Dear Heather is seen as a transitional, exploratory record bridging Cohen's reclusive years and the triumphant late-career renaissance that followed with Old Ideas and later albums.

The Label

Both sides show a white ground with a pale grey-blue interlocking-knot graphic, a Columbia "eye" logo paired with the Music On Vinyl wordmark, and rim text reading "Originally released (P) & (C) 2004 Sony Music Entertainment. This release (P) & (C) 2012 Sony Music Entertainment," with the catalogue number MOVLP502 printed at left. That 2012 copyright line is the label's own date stamp and cannot predate a 2012 pressing however faithfully it echoes the original 2004 packaging. Dear Heather had no official vinyl release in 2004 - only CD and later unofficial bootleg pressings circulated - so this Music On Vinyl edition stands as the record's first authorized LP issue, superseded only by the 2017 Columbia Europe 180-gram reissue.

Fidelity

The album was mastered by Stephen Marcussen at Marcussen Mastering in Hollywood and cut to 180-gram vinyl manufactured in the Netherlands for this Music On Vinyl edition. Collectors generally regard this pressing as a solid, clean-sounding cut consistent with other Music On Vinyl reissues of the period, though pressing quality on this plant has been reported as somewhat variable copy to copy. As the sole official vinyl edition until the 2017 Columbia Europe reissue, it has no earlier vinyl pressing to be compared against, and collector consensus places it as the baseline reference cut for the album on vinyl.

Notes

This is the 2012 Music On Vinyl 180-gram reissue of Dear Heather, the first authorized vinyl edition of the album. The labels carry a dual copyright line - "Originally released 2004 ... This release 2012" - which dates the pressing itself to 2012 regardless of the original album's 2004 release. Matrix/runout codes (91741 1A/1B MOVLP 502) match the Music On Vinyl catalogue entry for this number. No official vinyl predates this edition, so it ranks as the earliest LP pressing of the title, below only itself in the vinyl hierarchy, with the 2017 Columbia Europe reissue following it.
