This Pressing

2014 Music On Vinyl European reissue (180g gatefold) - the label's own 2014 copyright line marks this as the title's first vinyl pressing, not an original, since the album was CD-only on its original 2000-2001 release.

The Album

Field Commander Cohen gathers performances from Leonard Cohen's late-1979 European tour, taped mainly across three nights at the Hammersmith Odeon in London with a further date at Brighton's Dome, in support of that year's Recent Songs. Cohen was travelling with the six-piece band billed as Passenger, whose blend of oud, violin, jazz-inflected guitar and keyboards gave these versions of his songs a looser, more worldly cast than the austere arrangements of his early studio albums. The set draws across his catalogue to that point, pairing newer material such as “The Gypsy's Wife” and “The Guests” with reworked staples like “Bird on the Wire,” “So Long, Marianne” and “Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye.” Cohen's voice, by this stage deeper and more weathered than on his 1960s recordings, is frequently singled out by critics as a highlight of these performances, lending the songs a gravity his earlier readings lacked. The album sat unreleased for two decades before Columbia issued it as part of a wave of archival live material from Cohen's catalogue around the turn of the millennium. It has since been received as one of the stronger documents of Cohen as a live performer, valued for showing an artist still restlessly reinterpreting his own songbook a decade into his recording career.

The Label

Each side shows a grey/charcoal ground with red and white print: a red star panel beside the artist name, the Music On Vinyl wordmark, a boxed Columbia “eye” logo, and a white swirl device opposite the star; the rim text reads “Originally released ℗ & © 2000 Sony Music Entertainment. This release ℗ & © 2014 Sony Music Entertainment… Made in the EU. BIEM/STEMRA.” That 2014 copyright line places this pressing in the Music On Vinyl reissue program that began putting the catalogue title on vinyl for the first time that year, well after the record's original 2000-2001 CD issue. The design and rim wording are consistent across all four sides and match no earlier vinyl variant, since none existed before this one.

Fidelity

This pressing was cut for Music On Vinyl's 180-gram reissue series from the original digital-era masters rather than from analogue tape, and was manufactured at a European plant rather than at a specialist audiophile facility. Collectors on the forums generally rate Music On Vinyl's run-of-the-line reissues as solid, quiet pressings without the distinction of the label's audiophile-tier titles, and since no earlier vinyl edition or audiophile remaster of this album exists, this pressing stands as the only vinyl version available rather than ranking within a competing fidelity hierarchy.

Notes

This is the 2014 Music On Vinyl/Columbia European pressing, MOVLP1012, a 180-gram gatefold 2LP. The side labels carry a ℗ & © 2014 Sony Music Entertainment line, which fixes manufacture in or after that year and rules out any earlier date. The matrix runouts (98118 1A/2B/1C/1D MOVLP 1012) are consistent with a standard Music On Vinyl pressing run. The title had no vinyl edition before this series, so the pressing represents the earliest vinyl issue of the album, as opposed to an original-era record.
