This Pressing

1975 UK CBS pressing (stereo) - standard first UK trade issue of the compilation, orange-to-yellow CBS gradient labels, ℗ 1975 compilation date.

The Album

Leonard Cohen arrived in popular music as a published poet and novelist already in his thirties, and his first four albums - Songs of Leonard Cohen (1967), Songs from a Room (1969), Songs of Love and Hate (1971) and New Skin for the Old Ceremony (1974) - established him as one of the era's most distinctive songwriters, trading the folk revival's optimism for a spare, literary melancholy. This compilation draws its twelve tracks from across that run, pairing early signature pieces such as “Suzanne” and “So Long, Marianne” - songs rooted in his Montreal and Greek-island years - with the harder-edged “Bird on the Wire” and “The Partisan” from the Nashville sessions, and later, more confessional material like “Famous Blue Raincoat” and “Chelsea Hotel No. 2”. Cohen's own liner notes on the back cover, offering brief, often wry accounts of each song's origins, underline how closely his writing stayed tied to lived experience - hotel rooms, broken love affairs, friendships and political upheaval. Critically, Cohen's early work was divisive on release - too literary for some rock audiences - but it steadily built the devoted following that made him one of the most covered and revered songwriters of his generation, and these songs in particular became foundational to his reputation, cited for decades afterward as the core of his achievement in the 1960s and 70s.

The Label

Side 1 carries the UK CBS gradient label running orange at the top to yellow at the bottom with dark brown print, the boxed CBS “eye” device at top centre and the CBS wordmark in pale blue beneath it; side 2 carries the same CBS gradient family in a slightly redder orange-to-yellow shading with the eye-in-square device above pale-blue CBS lettering - both are the mid-1970s UK CBS compilation label style used across the group's catalogue numbers in this run, not a Columbia US label. The ℗ 1975 CBS Inc. compilation date printed on both sides means this copy cannot have been pressed before 1975, so it sits with the first UK trade pressings of this title rather than any of the later Iberian, Israeli or Yugoslav (Suzy) repress runs that reused the same catalogue number into the 1980s. The runout letters typed for this copy (A5/B4 suffixes) do not match any of the specific stamper states recorded for the matched UK release, so this copy represents an otherwise-unremarked stamper state within that same first UK pressing run.

Fidelity

This is a standard-issue 1970s UK CBS pressing rather than an audiophile cut, sourced from the original mono-era and early-70s stereo masters of Cohen's first four albums; no mastering engineer is credited on the jacket or labels. Collectors generally regard the original-era CBS/Columbia pressings of Cohen's catalogue as solid but unremarkable sonically next to the later 180-gram reissue series, which benefits from modern remastering and heavier vinyl. Within this title's own history, this UK first pressing ranks above the various later European and Yugoslav repressings of the same catalogue number but below the current 180-gram reissue for sheer surface quality.

Notes

This is a 1975 UK CBS stereo pressing of Greatest Hits, catalogue S 69161, made in England. The orange-to-yellow gradient CBS “eye” labels and the ℗ 1975 CBS Inc. compilation date printed on both sides place it among the first UK trade pressings of this title, ahead of the various Iberian, Israeli and Yugoslav (Suzy) repressings that carried the same catalogue number into the 1980s. The stamper suffixes in the runout represent an additional state within that same UK pressing window rather than a separate edition; the plant is identified in the companies' credits as CBS's Aston Clinton facility.
