The Album
Leonard Cohen appeared at the third Isle of Wight festival in the early hours of August 31, 1970, roused from sleep in his trailer to face a restive crowd of some 600,000 after a night of unrest and fires had unsettled the grounds. Backed by the loose acoustic ensemble he had assembled for his first sustained touring, he opened with a quiet, almost conversational authority that drew the audience back from the brink of chaos - a performance that has since become one of the defining Cohen legends, set against Jimi Hendrix's incendiary set earlier that night. The set drew on his first two albums, pairing signature songs such as 'Suzanne', 'So Long, Marianne' and 'Bird on the Wire' with spoken introductions, poetry and the unreleased 'Famous Blue Raincoat', then still new. Coming only two years into his recording career, the show captured Cohen moving from literary outsider to a commanding, if soft-spoken, live performer, deepening the persona of the wry troubadour-poet that would define his work for decades. Long circulated in bootleg form and glimpsed in festival documentaries, the performance affirmed Cohen's standing as a singular voice in the early-1970s singer-songwriter landscape and has since been regarded as among the most storied sets in the history of the festival.

The Label
Side 2 and Side 4 carry a white ground with black print, the CBS 'eye' over COLUMBIA and the Legacy 'L' logo at bottom centre, the Music On Vinyl wordmark at lower left, a 33 1/3 RPM STEREO box, and text crediting manufacture and distribution by Music On Vinyl for Sony Music Entertainment, Made in the EU, catalogue numbers MOVLP005 and 88697 57070 1-2/1-4, with a 2009 copyright/phonogram line. Sides 1 and 3 are picture labels (a monochrome stage photograph of Cohen) carrying only the title and the 88697 57070 1-1/1-3 number, with no company name, rim text or address visible. This design places the copy in the Music On Vinyl reissue program that ran this title alongside the US Columbia/Legacy release in the same release year, not in any earlier Isle of Wight pressing - there is no earlier vinyl edition of this title, first issued in 2009.
Fidelity
The album draws on the original 1970 festival tapes, mixed and prepared for this archival release; mastering credits are not printed on the jacket or labels. As a standard-weight Music On Vinyl pressing rather than one of the house's audiophile 180g series, collectors rate the pressing as solid and quiet but not a sonic standout, with the 2017 180-gram Columbia/Legacy reissue generally regarded as the more robust-sounding cut of the title.
Notes
This is the 2009 Music On Vinyl pressing of the first-ever vinyl release of the Isle of Wight performance, not an earlier edition - the title had no prior vinyl issue. The Columbia/Legacy branded labels (sides 2 and 4) carry a 2009 copyright and phonogram date and the Music On Vinyl manufacturing credit with a Made in the EU mark, while sides 1 and 3 are picture labels bearing only the title and catalogue suffix. The matrix/runouts read 85174 2A-2D MOVLP 005 across all four sides, consistent with the Music On Vinyl 2LP pressing of this catalogue number.
