This Pressing

1969 UK CBS stereo pressing (S 63587) - orange CBS box-logo label, publisher-year stamps of 1967-1969 place it in or after 1969, the earliest window for the UK stereo issue.

The Album

Songs From A Room is Leonard Cohen’s second album, recorded in Nashville in 1968-69 with producer Bob Johnston after Cohen had grown dissatisfied with the lush arrangements of his debut. The sessions aimed for a sparer, more austere sound built around Cohen’s voice and guitar with understated backing, matching the stark, almost liturgical tone of the songs. It opens with ‘Bird On The Wire’, which Cohen later called close to a personal credo, and includes ‘The Partisan’, a French Resistance song he adapted into English, and ‘Story Of Isaac’, a meditation on sacrifice and war. The album arrived as Cohen was establishing himself as one of the defining singer-songwriters to emerge from the late-1960s folk scene, prized as much for his literary background as a poet and novelist as for his music. Its severity and restraint influenced the minimalist, confessional strain of folk and singer-songwriter music that followed through the 1970s. Critics at the time and since have praised its unflinching, plainspoken lyricism and its refusal of the ornamentation common to the era’s folk-rock. It remains one of the most discussed and covered records in Cohen’s catalogue, anchoring his reputation as a songwriter of unusual gravity and precision.

The Label

Side 1 and Side 2 both carry the orange CBS label with dark brown print and the square CBS box logo centred over a set of concentric rings with a diagonal stroke, rim text reading the standard CBS rights notice, and ‘MADE IN ENGLAND’ at the foot - the UK CBS house design used across the catalogue‑number family from the late 1960s into the early 1970s. The sleeve carries the catalogue number 63587 while the labels print S 63587, a routine sleeve/label numbering mismatch rather than a variant marker. The labels’ own publisher-year stamps (1967-1969) place manufacture in or after 1969, which is consistent with this being an early UK stereo pressing of the title rather than any pre‑1969 issue. Within the UK run this stereo orange-label pressing sits below the mono orange-label first pressing and above the 1970s reissue pressings of the same catalogue number.

Fidelity

The album was tracked in Nashville under producer Bob Johnston with engineer Neil Wilburn, a deliberately spare, close-mic’d session sound that favours Cohen’s voice and guitar over studio polish. This UK CBS pressing was cut and manufactured domestically rather than imported, and collectors generally rate these early UK orange-label stereo copies as solid, if unspectacular, pressings true to the intended stark mix. Later audiophile-style reissues on 150g and 180g vinyl have circulated but are not regarded by collectors as a meaningful sonic upgrade over a clean original stereo pressing such as this one.

Notes

UK CBS stereo first-issue window pressing of Songs From A Room, S 63587. The orange box-logo labels carry publisher credit and ℗ dates running 1967-1969, which rules out any pressing earlier than 1969 and is consistent with the original UK stereo release rather than a later reissue. The sleeve’s catalogue number (63587) differs from the label’s (S 63587), a sleeve/label numbering variance seen on this pressing rather than evidence of a different edition. The runout numbers transcribed for this copy share the SBPG 63587 A1/B5 stamped sequence used on the first UK stereo pressings, though the specific stamper suffixes were not fully legible.
