This Pressing

2021 Record Store Day Black Friday 50th Anniversary pressing (stereo) - Columbia/Legacy red label, opaque white 180g vinyl, Sterling-cut lacquers, pressed at Pallas; a later reissue, not an original 1971 pressing.

The Album

Songs of Love and Hate was Leonard Cohen's third studio album, recorded in Nashville and London sessions produced by Bob Johnston and released in March 1971, arriving just as the plaintive melancholy of his first two records hardened into something starker and more desolate. The songs trace a bleak arc from the ecstatic dread of the opening “Avalanche” through the bitter domestic reckoning of “Last Year's Man” and “Dress Rehearsal Rag” to the elegiac “Famous Blue Raincoat,” a letter-form ballad of betrayal and reconciliation that became one of the most covered and analysed songs of Cohen's career. “Joan of Arc,” closing the record, recasts romantic surrender as martyrdom, a recurring motif in Cohen's writing of religious and erotic imagery fused together. Coming after the commercially mixed reception of Songs from a Room, the album deepened Cohen's reputation as a poet-songwriter of uncommon literary weight rather than a pop figure, and it has since been recognised as one of the most unflinching records of the singer-songwriter era. Critics at the time were divided by its austerity, but the album's reputation has only grown, with “Famous Blue Raincoat” and “Avalanche” now considered essential entries in Cohen's songbook. It remains a touchstone for the confessional, darkly romantic strain of folk songwriting that Cohen helped define.

The Label

The labels on this copy are red with orange-gold Columbia-eye rim lettering, black title and track print, and a Sony Music/Legacy “L” logo pair at the bottom centre - the standard red Columbia reissue design used across Sony Legacy's catalogue-era vinyl program rather than the black 1970s Columbia/CBS label. The rim text and the LC00162 label code (a format that did not exist before 1977) place this pressing firmly in the modern Sony Legacy era, and the copyright line “Artwork © 1970, 2021” dates the pressing itself to 2021. This is therefore the Record Store Day Black Friday 50th Anniversary reissue, not any of the 1971 Columbia or CBS first pressings, which carried the black label with the six-eye or two-eye Columbia design of their respective eras.

Fidelity

This pressing was mastered and lacquer-cut at Sterling Sound and manufactured by Pallas in Germany, a plant generally well regarded for quiet, flat vinyl. As a modern reissue cut from a 2021 Sony Legacy transfer rather than from vintage analog lacquers, it is not regarded by collectors as sonically superior to a well-preserved original Columbia pressing, though it is considered a clean, listenable cut typical of Sony's catalogue reissue program. No audiophile-tier remaster (such as an Analogue Productions or Mobile Fidelity cut) of this title exists to rank it against; among reissues it stands alongside the Sundazed 150g LP as a respectable but non-definitive modern pressing.

Notes

This is the 2021 Record Store Day Black Friday 50th Anniversary edition on 180g opaque white vinyl, limited to 5,000 copies, with a 12x12 lyric booklet and embossed cover. The label code and the 2021 copyright line on the labels date the pressing itself, confirming it postdates every 1971 Columbia and CBS first pressing of this title by decades regardless of the reproduced black-label-era track information. Mastered and lacquer-cut at Sterling Sound and manufactured by Pallas in Germany, it sits below the 1971 originals in collector hierarchy as a modern specialty reissue rather than a vintage pressing.
