2019 pressing (stereo) - Columbia/Legacy grey Sony-era labels; NOT PRESSED BEFORE 2019, so this is an original-era copy of the standard gatefold edition, not an earlier issue (none exists) nor the exclusive white vinyl variant.

The Album

Thanks for the Dance is the posthumous ninth studio album by Leonard Cohen, released in November 2019, a little over three years after his death in November 2016. The record grew out of poems, voice memos and unfinished lyric fragments Cohen left behind, which his son Adam Cohen gathered and built into finished songs together with a circle of musicians and admirers, working largely around Cohen's own spoken-word vocal takes recorded in the final period of his life. It serves as a direct companion to his final album You Want It Darker, completing a body of work Cohen was still shaping as his health failed, and it extends the stark, aphoristic late style - meditations on mortality, faith, love and departure delivered in his deep spoken-sung baritone - that had defined his last decade of recordings. The album arrived as the capstone of a remarkable late-career renaissance that began with 2012's Old Ideas and continued through Popular Problems and You Want It Darker, cementing Cohen's status as one of popular song's most enduring poets into his eighties. Critics received it as a graceful and moving coda, praising the restraint of the arrangements built around Cohen's voice and the way the surrounding musicians honored rather than overwhelmed his final words. It stands as the closing statement of a songwriting career that stretched from the folk clubs of the 1960s to global acclaim, reaffirming Cohen's legacy as a singular voice in Canadian and international songwriting.

The Label

Both side labels are the grey Columbia/Legacy design used on this 2019 release: gold and white lettering on a grey ground, with the Columbia eye-in-box, Legacy "L" and Sony Music swoosh grouped along the bottom edge, and distribution text crediting Sony Music Entertainment Canada Inc. The copyright line reads © & ℗ 2019 Sony Music Entertainment, placing the design squarely in the post-1991 Sony-era Columbia/Legacy scheme used for new Legacy-line releases rather than any earlier Columbia label generation. This design, together with the LC00162 label code and the 2019 copyright line, places the copy as part of the album's original pressing run rather than any subsequent repress - its only true era marker is that it cannot predate 2019.

Fidelity

The album was mastered for this LP pressing from the same digital masters used across its 2019 release program; there is no distinct audiophile cut reported for this edition. Collectors and forum consensus regard the standard black-vinyl pressing as solid but unremarkable sonically, typical of major-label 180-gram releases of the period, with the exclusive white-vinyl pressing generally viewed as a collectible variant rather than a sonic upgrade. No audiophile specialist reissue (Analogue Productions, Mobile Fidelity, etc.) of this title exists, so this standard edition is effectively the top of its own fidelity tier.

Notes

This is the standard black-vinyl gatefold edition of the 2019 release, identified by its grey Columbia/Legacy labels bearing the 2019 copyright line and LC00162 label code. The runout etchings (197136E1/A and 197136E2/AA, BG stamp) correspond to the catalogue number 19075978661 pressed into both sides. As the album's first and only release to date, there is no earlier pressing to rank against; the copy sits among the ordinary territory pressings of the standard gatefold edition rather than the separately issued exclusive white vinyl or Japanese variants.
