The Album
Cookin' with the Miles Davis Quintet is one of four Prestige albums drawn from two marathon 1956 sessions (May 11 and October 26) at Rudy Van Gelder's Hackensack studio, recorded to fulfill Miles Davis's remaining Prestige contract after he had already signed with Columbia. Rather than write new material, the band ran through its club-honed live repertoire in single takes, yielding roughly two dozen performances that were later parceled out across Cookin', Relaxin', Workin', and Steamin'. The quintet of Davis, John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones is regarded as one of the defining small groups in modern jazz, its tightly wound rhythm section framing the contrast between Miles's spare, muted lyricism and Coltrane's searching tenor. The Label
The label on this copy reproduces the classic yellow-and-black Prestige 'fireworks' design with the 446 W. 50th St., N.Y.C. address, matching the look of the 1957 original, but the fine print rim text reads '© 2022 Craft Recordings. Under license courtesy of Concord to Analogue Productions,' which places it squarely in the modern Analogue Productions era rather than the 1950s. Prestige's original run at this address dates to the mid-to-late 1950s before the label later moved and was absorbed into Fantasy in the 1970s; AP's 2022 facsimile deliberately restores that vintage look for its licensed 'Mono' series. There is no deep-groove ring on this pressing, and the dead wax carries Kevin Gray/QRP engraving rather than RVG stamps, marking this as the officially licensed all-analog reissue, not a period pressing, and placing it at the top of the modern-reissue tier of the hierarchy rather than among vintage Prestige pressings.
Fidelity
All-analog (AAA) cut by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio from the original mono master tapes, pressed at Quality Record Pressings; collectors on the forums rate it among the best-sounding modern editions of this title, with quiet, flat vinyl and a warm, present mono image. In the fidelity hierarchy it ranks below an exceptional clean 1957 RVG original (which retains vintage tape 'air' but often carries surface noise), sits above worn originals and the 1980s OJC-128, and is comparable to the earlier 2008 AP mono edition. For most listeners this represents the practical best-sounding copy short of a mint 1957 first pressing.
