This Pressing

2012 Mobile Fidelity numbered limited edition reissue (MFSL 1-375), not an original Columbia pressing; mastered from analog tapes by Krieg Wunderlich/Shawn Britton on the GAIN 2 Ultra Analog System.

The Album

Sketches of Spain (1960) was the third of Miles Davis's landmark orchestral collaborations with arranger Gil Evans, following Miles Ahead and Porgy and Bess, pushing their partnership further into a hybrid of jazz improvisation and Spanish/flamenco idiom. Its centerpiece, an adaptation of the adagio from Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez, became the emotional core of the record, with Evans's lush, cinematic orchestration framing Davis's spare, vocal-like trumpet lines. Recorded with a large ensemble of woodwinds, brass, and percussion rather than a conventional combo across sessions in late 1959 and spring 1960, the album found Davis functioning as a soloist within an orchestral tone poem rather than a small-group bandleader, a departure that divided critics between those who found it beautiful and those who missed jazz spontaneity. Arriving between the modal breakthrough of Kind of Blue and his later 1960s quintet work, it cemented Davis and Evans as one of the most important composer-soloist pairings in jazz history. Its fusion of European classical form, Spanish folk color, and jazz phrasing proved deeply influential on third-stream and later orchestral/exoticist jazz projects. The album remains one of the most acclaimed entries in both artists' discographies, prized for its haunting atmosphere and orchestral ambition.

The Label

The side labels show MoFi's silver-arc-over-black 'Original Master Recording' design with the Columbia 'walking eye' logo and MoFi logo both present, used across MFSL's post-2011 audiophile reissue program following the label's relaunch under Mike Ritter/Music Direct. The trail-off text credits '© 1960, 2012 Sony Music Entertainment / Originally released 1960,' confirming this is a licensed Sony/Columbia reissue rather than a vintage Columbia pressing. The MFSL 1-375 catalog number and 'GAIN 2 Ultra Analog' branding place it in MoFi's standard 180g numbered LP series (2012), distinct from both the original 1960 Columbia 6-eye stereo issue and the later, pricier UltraDisc One-Step box treatment. This placement confirms the copy sits in the mid-tier of the album's overall pressing hierarchy - well above generic Columbia reissues in sonics but below the original first pressing's collectible status.

Fidelity

Mastered by Krieg Wunderlich (assisted by Shawn Britton) at Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab from the analog master tapes using the proprietary GAIN 2 Ultra Analog System, and pressed on 180g vinyl at RTI. Collectors generally rate this MoFi cut favorably for quieter surfaces and an expanded soundstage compared to standard Columbia reissues, though some purists still favor the tonal warmth of the original 6-eye Columbia pressing. Within the album's fidelity hierarchy this standard MFSL 180g LP sits above generic Columbia reissues and CD/digital transfers, but below a clean original 1960 6-eye Columbia stereo pressing and below MoFi's own later, pricier UltraDisc One-Step box set.

Notes

This is the 2012 Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab audiophile reissue, catalog MFSL 1-375, of the 1960 Columbia original CS 8271. Label credits '© 1960, 2012 Sony Music Entertainment / Originally released 1960' and a numbered-edition stamp (No. 001789) on the jacket confirm it as a licensed, numbered limited pressing rather than a vintage Columbia copy. The matrix runouts (MFSL1-375 A1 KW@MOFI 20519.1 / B1 KW@MOFI 20519.2) show Krieg Wunderlich in-house mastering codes consistent with MoFi's own lacquer cutting, pressed on 180g vinyl at RTI.
