The Album
Sketches of Spain was the third and final large-scale orchestral collaboration between Miles Davis and arranger Gil Evans, following Miles Ahead (1957) and Porgy and Bess (1959). Davis became fixated on Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez after hearing it, and Evans reimagined its adagio movement as the album's centerpiece, recording across sessions in November 1959 and March 1960 at Columbia's 30th Street Studio. Evans built an unconventional ensemble around Davis's trumpet and flugelhorn - French horns, tuba, harp, bassoon, and flamenco-inflected percussion - blending Spanish classical and folk sources with his own compositions, including "Saeta," drawn from Holy Week processional music, and the closing "Solea." The sessions were exacting and demanding, with Evans meticulously shaping every orchestral texture, and the resulting album is often held up as the fullest realization of the Third Stream fusion of jazz improvisation and classical form. Davis himself counted it among his favorite recordings, and it marks a creative peak in both his and Evans's careers. The album won a Grammy Award, became one of the best-selling jazz records of its era, was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, and remains a touchstone of orchestral jazz.

The Label
The label on this copy is a retro red design with repeated gold "COLUMBIA" rim text, a small "Legacy" box logo, a "STEREO" designation, and the modern 11-digit Sony catalog number (88697404141) printed on the label itself - this is Sony Legacy's retro-styled recreation of the classic Columbia look, created specifically for the 2009-2011 Miles Davis 180-gram reissue campaign, and is not any vintage Columbia label design. Genuine vintage Columbia pressings of this title instead carry the six-eye "360 Sound" label (1960, first pressing) or later two-eye and plain red-label designs into the 1970s. The barcoded back cover, Legacy/Sony copyright strings, and the reproduced "The Inner Sleeve" newspaper-style Columbia promo insert further confirm this as a manufactured retro package rather than an original artifact. Placement is unambiguous: this is a 2010 modern reissue, sitting far below the 1960 six-eye original and the 2024 Mobile Fidelity audiophile edition in the pressing hierarchy.
Fidelity
Cut by Ray Janos at Sterling Sound ("RJ" in the deadwax) and pressed on HQ-180 vinyl at RTI for Sony's Legacy Miles Davis reissue series, reportedly sourced from the original analog masters. Forum and audiophile consensus regards it as a quiet, dynamic, good-value modern cut, though the inherently dry, somewhat thin 30th Street Studio soundstage limits any pressing of this title. In the fidelity hierarchy this copy ranks below the 2024 Mobile Fidelity UD1S (the current reference edition) and below clean 1960 six-eye stereo originals, but above the contemporaneous Music On Vinyl European pressing and budget reissues.
Notes
2010 US Legacy/Columbia reissue of Sketches of Spain (88697 40414 1), stereo, 180 gram. The retro red Columbia labels bear the modern Legacy box logo and 11-digit Sony catalog number, with a barcoded back cover carrying Legacy/Sony copyright lines and a reproduced "The Inner Sleeve" newspaper insert - none of which appear on any vintage Columbia pressing. The deadwax carries "RJ STERLING," marking the cut by Ray Janos at Sterling Sound, on the RTI-pressed HQ-180 edition within Sony's Miles Davis vinyl reissue series. Not an original pressing; the 1960 originals carry six-eye "360 Sound" labels and CL 1480 / CS 8271 catalog numbers.
