This Pressing

2011 Music Matters Ltd. 45 RPM reissue, numbered Special Edition test pressing - Plastylite-logo test-pressing labels on sides 1 and 3, blank labels on sides 2 and 4.

The Album

Fuchsia Swing Song was Sam Rivers's debut as a leader, cut for Blue Note on December 11, 1964 at Van Gelder Studio after Rivers, then in his early forties, had spent years working Boston's clubs and briefly playing with Miles Davis's group in 1964. He assembled a rhythm section of Jaki Byard, Ron Carter and the twenty-year-old Tony Williams, all of whom shared his appetite for stretching hard-bop form without abandoning swing altogether. The six Rivers originals move between knotty, asymmetrical themes and passages of near-free improvisation, anchored by Byard's elastic comping and the Carter-Williams team's famously loose yet propulsive time feel. The album arrived at a moment when Blue Note was simultaneously backing bebop-rooted mainstream dates and the new, freer directions of players like Rivers, Eric Dolphy and Andrew Hill, and it helped establish the label's reputation for championing advanced but still accessible jazz. Critics have long cited it as one of the most fully realized meetings of hard-bop language and open-form exploration to come out of the Blue Note stable in the mid-1960s. It remains a foundational entry in Rivers's catalogue and a touchstone recording for the mid-1960s rhythm section pairing of Carter and Williams outside the Davis quintet.

The Label

Side 1 and Side 3 carry a white label printed in blue with a Plastylite Corporation script logo at the foot and fields for CUSTOMER, NUMBER, DATE and APPROVAL; the Number field is hand-stamped MM BST 84184 A/B on Side 1 and MM BST 84184 C/D on Side 3, and both are headed TEST PRESSING and REVIEW COPY. Side 2 and Side 4 are plain blank white stock with no printing at all. This Plastylite-logo test-pressing label is the commemorative design Music Matters used on its limited, numbered test-pressing runs for the 45 RPM reissue series, and it dates this copy to that 2011 run rather than to the original 1950s-60s Blue Note Plastylite pressings of the title. The cover prints the catalogue number as ST-84184 while the label stamps read MM BST 84184 - the two numbering conventions reflect the same Music Matters reissue but are not identical strings.

Fidelity

This copy carries the AcousTech Mastering cut by Kevin Gray for the Music Matters Blue Note 45 RPM Definitive Reissue Series, pressed at Record Technology Incorporated on 180g vinyl and split across two LPs at 45 RPM for wider dynamic range. Collectors on the forums regard the Music Matters 45 RPM Blue Note series, mastered from the original analogue tapes, as among the best-sounding versions of these titles available, generally ranked above the standard-speed Blue Note reissues and most CD editions and on par with or ahead of other audiophile reissue runs of the same catalogue. As a test pressing this specific copy predates final production approval and may carry minor sonic variance from the issued commercial copies, though it shares the same mastering lacquers.

Notes

This is the 2011 Music Matters Ltd. two-LP, 45 RPM reissue of Fuchsia Swing Song (MMBST-84184), not an original Blue Note pressing: the gatefold jacket carries the Music Matters Jazz 45 RPM series sticker numbered 0033, and sides 1 and 3 carry the commemorative Plastylite-logo test-pressing label marked TEST PRESSING and REVIEW COPY, with sides 2 and 4 left entirely blank. The hand-stamped runout numbers read MM BST 84184 A/B and C/D, matching the Music Matters catalogue rather than the original Blue Note BST 84184 stereo issue. The stamped runout codes on this copy read KG@ATM rather than the KPG@ATM P sequence found on the standard numbered release, consistent with a pre-release test stage of the same mastering.
