This Pressing

1981 US first and only known pressing - Solid Smoke Records house label, live material from the 1978 and 1979 festivals.

The Album

San Francisco Blues Festival Vol. 2 gathers live performances taped at the annual West Coast blues gathering founded in 1973 by Tom Mazzolini, an event that grew from a single afternoon into the signature blues showcase of the Bay Area. Side one is given over to Chicago blues veteran Jimmy Rogers, the guitarist who helped define the postwar Chicago sound alongside Muddy Waters and who here fronts a band with fellow Chicagoan Louis Myers on second guitar, running through staples like a storming reading of a Jimmy Reed-style shuffle and his own signature ballad. Side two turns to the regional players the festival was built to spotlight: Seattle-based guitarist Isaac Scott, whose gospel-rooted playing had anchored the Pacific Northwest blues scene for years; Bay Area singer Charles Houff; barrelhouse pianist Big Joe Duskin, a Cincinnati boogie-woogie specialist then only recently rediscovered and touring after decades out of the spotlight; and Texas-bred guitarist Phillip Walker, a Clifton Chenier alumnus who had become one of the West Coast's most respected blues guitarists. Together the two sides function as a document of how the festival mixed name acts with hard-working regional veterans who rarely received wider exposure. The album stands as part of an informal oral history of American blues as it was being kept alive on the West Coast in the late 1970s, prized less for any single landmark performance than for capturing a moment and a community of musicians whose stories were otherwise going untold.

The Label

The label is a blue field with a large silver "Solid Smoke" logo and a silver lightning-bolt/star-burst graphic; the catalogue number SS-8010 and side number sit at left, the title stacked at upper right, and a small copyright line reading "Copyright Solid Smoke Records 1981" runs along the lower rim. No alternate label design for this catalogue number has turned up to compare it against, so this blue Solid Smoke house design stands as the only pressing of record for this title and this copy sits at the head (and only entry) of its own hierarchy.

Fidelity

The performances were captured live at the festival and tape-remastered by Joe Tarantino for this release; as a field-recorded blues anthology rather than a studio audiophile production, fidelity is serviceable but not demonstration-grade, with some variation in balance between the different sets. No audiophile or specialist reissue of this title is known, so this original pressing is the only cut collectors can seek out.

Notes

This is the 1981 US release of the second volume in Solid Smoke's three-LP San Francisco Blues Festival series. The blue Solid Smoke label matches the only pressing documented for this catalogue number, and nothing on the jacket or labels points to a later reissue. The side one program was taped live on August 13, 1978 and side two combines sets from August 11-13, 1978-79, tape-remastered by Joe Tarantino at Clearsound for this LP release.
