The Album

The Last Waltz documents the farewell concert The Band staged at San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom on Thanksgiving Day 1976, a performance conceived by guitarist Robbie Robertson as a formal close to the group's sixteen years on the road. Having backed Ronnie Hawkins and then Bob Dylan before striking out on their own with Music from Big Pink, The Band had become one of the defining groups of American roots rock, and the concert drew on that lineage by inviting the very artists who had shaped their career, from Dylan and Hawkins to Muddy Waters and Paul Butterfield. The album pairs the concert's run through The Band's own catalogue with a procession of guest turns by Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Neil Diamond, Dr. John, Emmylou Harris, Ringo Starr, Ron Wood and The Staples, before closing with a suite of songs recorded later in the studio with horn and string arrangements. Directed for film by Martin Scorsese, the concert and its accompanying album were conceived together as a single statement, and the record stands as one of rock's most celebrated farewell performances, cementing The Band's reputation as a group whose music absorbed blues, gospel, country and rock and roll into a singular American sound. Critics received it as a triumphant and bittersweet closing chapter, and it remains a touchstone of the 1970s live album and the all-star concert film format it helped popularize.

The Label

No side-label photograph accompanies this copy, so the label artwork itself cannot be described; what is confirmed is the jacket print, which carries the UK catalogue number K66076 alongside the US equivalent 3WS 3146 and states manufacture and distribution in England. Warner Bros.' UK pressings of this era used either the orange-and-tan 'Burbank' palm-tree label (in use roughly 1973-1978) or the plain cream/tan label that replaced it from 1978, and catalogue number K66076 is known in both forms for this same release year, so the two sit side by side rather than in a clear earlier/later order without seeing the actual label. This copy's placement in the hierarchy therefore rests on its jacket and country evidence alone, not on a label design that was not photographed.

Fidelity

The original 1978 Warner Bros. cut was mastered from the Last Waltz concert and studio tapes without digital intermediary, pressed at WEA's UK plant for this copy; collectors generally find the original pressings warm but not especially dynamic, a function of the dense multi-mic live recording rather than the cutting. The 2023 Rhino 45th Anniversary 180-gram reissue is the edition audiophile collectors point to for the cleanest, quietest surfaces and most modern remaster of this title, and it outranks this and other 1970s pressings for outright fidelity, though many longtime listeners still prefer the tonal character of an original cut for this particular recording.

Notes

This copy carries the UK catalogue number K66076 with the US equivalent 3WS 3146 printed alongside it, and the jacket states manufacture and distribution in England by WEA, placing it as a UK-made 1978 pressing. The label design is not stated, as Warner Bros.' UK pressings of this catalogue number appear in both the orange-and-tan 'Burbank' palm-tree style and the plain cream/tan style that succeeded it in 1978. The jacket, inner booklet and individual record sleeves are present, consistent with the complete package as issued, with the front cover grading EX and the back cover and inner booklet grading VG+.
