This Pressing

1988 US first-issue pressing (stereo) - Wilbury Record Co. label, Future Disc mastering stamp and Specialty Records Corp. (SRC) pressing-plant logo etched in the runouts.

The Album

Formed almost by accident in 1988 when George Harrison needed a quick B-side and gathered Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and Bob Dylan at Dave Stewart's home studio, the loose jam blossomed into a full album recorded in just over a week. Each member adopted a pseudonymous 'Wilbury' surname, masking five enormous solo careers behind a single playful band identity and a self-deprecating, back-porch camaraderie that ran through every track. The songs were written collaboratively and traded lead vocals among the five, giving the record a conversational, communal feel rare among all-star supergroups. It arrived at a moment when each Wilbury's solo career needed a lift, and the album's warmth and wit made it a commercial and critical triumph, reaching the upper reaches of album charts worldwide and eventually going multi-platinum. Roy Orbison died shortly after its release, lending the record a bittersweet poignancy as one of his final performances. The album is remembered as a rare case of a supergroup exceeding the sum of its considerable parts, blending roots rock, folk and pop with unforced charm, and it remains a touchstone of late-1980s rock for its unpretentious craft and camaraderie.

The Label

Side 1 of this copy's label is largely hidden behind the cover-art photo insert, showing only the catalogue number 1-25796 and the SIDE 1 marking; Side 2 is the grey-and-white Wilbury Record Co. design with the blue-and-red arched logo at top and the copyright line reading ALL SONGS WRITTEN BY TRAVELING WILBURYS / ALL SONGS COPYRIGHT CONTROL (c) 1988 GANGA DISTRIBUTORS, B.V. That 1988 copyright line is the label's own earliest possible date - the design was not printed before that year. The matrix etchings read on both sides (SR-2 suffix, Future Disc mastering stamp, SRC pressing-plant logo) place this specific copy as a Specialty Records Corporation pressing of the US first release, one of several stamper variants Specialty cut for the title's initial US run.

Fidelity

The album was mastered at Future Disc Systems in Los Angeles and pressed at Specialty Records Corporation's Olyphant, PA plant, one of several US plants used across the title's enormous first pressing run. Collectors generally regard US pressings from this era as sonically consistent and well above the needle-drop CD transfers, with no particular stamper variant singled out as superior given the scale of the pressing. This copy sits among the ordinary original US pressings rather than any audiophile reissue, which postdates it by decades.

Notes

This is a 1988 US pressing of the Wilburys' debut, placed by its matrix etchings (SR-2 suffix, Future Disc mastering, SRC pressing-plant stamp) among the Specialty Records Corporation-pressed copies of the original US release. The Side 1 label is largely obscured behind the cover-art insert, but the visible catalogue number and the Side 2 label's 1988 copyright line confirm the pressing era. The A-side runout reads the same SR-2 stamper as found on a sibling copy of this catalogue number, while that sibling's Side B etching carries an additional trailing letter, suggesting a slightly different stamper run of the same US pressing rather than a different edition.
