This Pressing

US Wilbury Records standard trade pressing (1988), SR-2 stamper run - Specialty Records Corporation plant stamp with Future Disc mastering in the runouts.

The Album

Formed almost by accident when a group of friends gathered to cut a B-side for a George Harrison single, the Traveling Wilburys brought together five of rock's most distinctive voices under joke pseudonyms, with each man slipping out of his solo identity to share verses and harmonies as equals. The sessions were loose and fast, built around front-porch acoustic guitars, warm harmony vocals, and a shared sense of humor that runs through the lyrics and the between-song patter captured in the arrangements. For Roy Orbison it arrived as a late-career triumph just months before his death, giving him one more hit record and a joyful final showcase for his voice. For the others it was a holiday from their own catalogs: Bob Dylan loosening into comic storytelling, Tom Petty leaning on easy harmony, Jeff Lynne shaping the record's polished, radio-ready sound, and George Harrison anchoring the whole project with warmth and wit. The album became a massive commercial and critical success, prized for its unpretentious camaraderie at a moment when each member's solo career had cooled, and it remains celebrated as one of the great supergroup records - a one-off union of legends that never tried to be more than a good time shared among friends.

The Label

Side 2 carries the white-and-grey Wilbury Records label with the band's blue-and-red arched logo at the top and the catalogue number 1-25796 at the foot, flat-pressed with no deep groove stated and the 1988 Ganga Distributors copyright line; Side 1's label is covered almost entirely by the printed band photo as issued and its typography cannot be read. The Wilbury Records imprint was created solely for this album and used only in 1988-89. The runout on this copy carries an SR-2 stamper designation, a later lacquer/stamper run than the SR-1 generation also pressed for this catalogue number, placing it slightly later within the same US pressing family rather than on its earliest run.

Fidelity

The album was mastered at Future Disc Systems in Los Angeles and pressed in the US at the Specialty Records Corporation plant, one of several plants (alongside Allied and the Columbia House-contracted Carrollton plant) used to meet demand for this hit release. Collectors generally find US pressings from this era to be solid, clean-sounding copies without a strong consensus favoring one domestic plant over another, since mastering was shared across them. This pressing sits among the standard original-era US copies rather than any audiophile reissue, as no audiophile remaster of this title existed at the time it was made.

Notes

This is the US 1988 Wilbury Records LP, catalogue 1-25796, pressed at the Specialty Records Corporation plant from a Future Disc Systems (Los Angeles) lacquer, as the runout etchings identify. The label is the standard Wilbury Records design used on the US trade pressing, with Side 2 fully legible and Side 1 largely covered by the printed band photo as issued. Nothing on the copy points to a club edition (no R- or W-prefixed club number, no Columbia House text), so it is an ordinary retail pressing rather than the mail-order club version that shares this same catalogue number family.
