The Album

Copulatin' Blues Volume One gathers sixteen recordings made mostly in the 1930s by blues and jazz singers and sidemen whose frank, double-entendre-laden songs about sex were too explicit for mainstream release or airplay in their day. The set draws on both well-known blues and vaudeville performers, among them Bessie Smith, Sidney Bechet, Jelly Roll Morton, Lucille Bogan, Tampa Red and Lil Johnson, pairing issued sides with several tracks that had gone unissued at the time because of their content. Liner notes by Howard

The Label

The labels on this copy carry the plain grey Stash moneybag logo over the title "COPULATIN' BLUES" with the catalogue number ST-101 at left and side number at right; no further label-design generations for this Stash catalogue number have been established, so the design seen here cannot be placed against an earlier or later Stash label typeset. The jacket carries the Stash Records Brooklyn, NY address and a 1976 copyright line, consistent with the label's earliest active years after its 1975 founding. Nothing on the label or jacket indicates a later reissue state of this catalogue number.

Fidelity

The lacquers were cut by Sam Feldman from the compiled 1930s 78 rpm masters and pressed by Goldisc Recording Products; as a reissue compilation of vintage 78s rather than a tape-sourced studio album, its fidelity is bounded by the condition and equalization of the source 78s rather than by the vinyl cut itself. Collectors generally regard the Stash transfers as solid, listenable restorations for their era rather than audiophile showpieces, and no later audiophile remaster of this specific compilation is in wide circulation to outrank it.

Notes

This is the 1976 US Stash stereo pressing of ST-101. The etched runout on both sides carries the Sam Feldman lacquer-cutting mark and the Goldisc pressing-plant code, matching the catalogue's own identifiers for this release. No alternate label artwork or typesetting for this catalogue number has been established, so the design on this copy cannot be ranked against any other Stash pressing of the same number.
