This Pressing

Japanese CBS/Sony promotional sample pressing (c. 1974) - black-and-white SAMPLE NOT FOR SALE labels, stamped matrix numbers mirroring the catalogue number on both sides.

The Album

This record preserves highlights of the two all-star memorial concerts staged for Woody Guthrie, at Carnegie Hall in 1968 and the Hollywood Bowl in 1970, assembled by Guthrie's longtime manager Harold Leventhal and adapted and staged by Millard Lampell. Guthrie, the itinerant Dust Bowl balladeer whose songs of migrant workers, union struggles and the American landscape shaped the folk revival, had died in 1967 after a long illness, and these concerts gathered the generation of performers he most directly influenced to carry his songs forward. The Label

Both sides carry a black-and-white CBS/Sony label with the oval CBS logo and a banner reading SAMPLE NOT FOR SALE above the catalogue number SOPL-29 and the 33 1/3 speed mark, with Japanese text at the rim stating the manufacturer's rights and the CBS Sony Records Inc., Tokyo, Japan address; the catalogue number on the jacket reads simply SOPL 29 without the side letter or stereo tag the label carries, a routine jacket/label mismatch. This black-and-white sample-label design is the promotional pressing CBS/Sony issued ahead of its commercial Japanese release, which carries the same catalogue number on an orange/cream label; the sample design therefore places this copy at the head of the Japanese pressing run, ahead of the commercial copies that followed with the recoloured label. The US, UK, Spanish, Dutch and Australian editions that preceded it on other catalogue numbers remain the first appearances of the title worldwide; this is the first Japanese appearance of Part One.

Fidelity

The album sources two different live recordings - the 1968 Carnegie Hall and 1970 Hollywood Bowl concerts - mastered together for this compilation, so fidelity varies track to track with the limitations of early-1970s multi-artist live concert recording rather than a single studio chain. Collectors generally treat the performances as historically valuable documents first and audiophile objects second; no audiophile remastering of this title is widely recognized. As a Japanese CBS/Sony pressing this copy benefits from that era's generally well-regarded vinyl formulation and quiet surfaces relative to contemporary US or European commercial copies.

Notes

This is the Japanese CBS/Sony issue of Part One, catalogue SOPL-29, in its black-and-white promotional sample-label form rather than the later orange/cream commercial Japanese label. The stamped side-1 and side-2 runout numbers mirror the catalogue number, consistent with the Japanese pressing of this release rather than the differently numbered US, UK or European editions of the same title. The jacket's printed catalogue number omits the side letter and stereo tag that the label itself carries, a minor jacket/label discrepancy typical of the title's international pressings.
